Reviewed by: Alice L.You don’t have to read far into Jonathan Auxier's debut novel Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes(for which he also provided the excellent chapter illustrations) to know that this is an author who has a happy and healthy relationship with classic children’s literature. The short chapters and fast-paced adventure keeps the reader rolling along until the inevitable conclusion. Only once he has reached the Vanished Kingdom, does it become clear that Peter is no ordinary thief and his skills are exactly what this kingdom has needed. The two are soon off on a quest to rescue the Vanished Kingdom from an evil heartless king. One day, after stealing a box and saving a zebra, Peter is transported to the Troublesome Lake of Professor Cake where he meets Sir Tode, an unusual knight. So begins the fantastic tale of an orphan who is raised to be a thief, the best thief in the world. Peter Nimble was found floating in the ocean his eyes plucked out, and a raven sitting on his basket. Beguiling, mesmerizing, totally transporting, and inventive, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes is a quick-paced, intelligent novel in the capable hands of a master storyteller. ![]()
